From BBQ to Referral: How Your Next Summer Outing Can Land You a Job Lead

Whether you’re on a beach, near a pool or one of those lucky people with a summer home, chances are you’ll be at a BBQ this summer.  And while you're enjoying that extra helping of potato salad, why not use the moment to boost your job search?

Here’s how:

1.     Get the word out.

How many friends or family members actually know you’re job searching—or even thinking about making a move? Your close circle would love to help, but they can’t if they don’t know how.

Come prepared with a simple way to talk about what you’re looking for. Identify two or three companies or industries you're targeting. Even if your Uncle Jim is a retired high school teacher, his childhood friend might be in a senior role at your dream company.

The more specific you are, the easier it is for people to connect the dots—and make a connection.

2.     Keep it light.

Being a good networker doesn’t mean working the entire room (or pool party). In fact, the best networking often happens in casual, one-on-one conversations. What matters most is projecting confidence, friendliness, and curiosity.

People are naturally drawn to positive energy. At a summer BBQ, that means being present, asking thoughtful questions, and letting conversations unfold organically. Don’t force the career talk—but if it comes up, be ready.

3.     It’s all about the follow-up.

I’m constantly surprised by how many job seekers work hard to make connections—then drop the ball on following up.

A summer BBQ or casual social gathering is just the beginning. What you do afterward is what really counts.

Let’s say Uncle Jim offers to introduce you to his childhood friend who works at your dream company. Reach out a day or two later to keep the momentum going. Here’s a quick follow-up template:

Uncle Jim, great to see you last weekend!  Thanks again for offering to connect me with [Name]. I’d love to set up a quick call to learn more about their role at [Company]. Would you prefer to reach out to see if they’re open to chatting, or should I get in touch directly? Really appreciate it!

And remember—circle back with Uncle Jim, too. Let him know how the conversation went, even if it doesn’t lead anywhere immediately. Gratitude and updates go a long way in keeping your network invested in your success.

Final Thought

Even though summer hiring may have slowed down with recruiters and hiring managers taking vacation time, your job search doesn’t have to stop. In fact, casual, low-pressure settings like BBQs and beach days can be the perfect time to uncover opportunities you might not find online.

The next time someone asks, “So what are you up to these days?” — don’t just shrug. Use it as an opening. You never know who’s listening or how a relaxed summer conversation could turn into your next job lead.
